The Hike out to the Ocean Entry

A flat 4 mile hike along a gravel paved road at the end of highway 130 in Kalapana leads you to the the lava ocean entry at Kamokuna. The viewing area of the ocean entry makes for fantastic views of the current flow erupting from Puʻu ʻŌʻō vent of Kīlauea’s East Rift Zone. Stay for dramatic views of sunset and the birth of new land.

Parking & Bike Rental

The parking lot at the end of highway 130 is open for entry, daily from 3:00pm to 9:00pm. Bike rentals are also available from multiple vendors, with prices ranging from $10/hr to $25/night.

Visitors should be prepared with sturdy shoes, extra water and snacks, sunscreen, protective clothing and flashlights. Restroom facilities are limited and lack running water.
